Entour\u00e9e d\u2019un cadre en bois dor\u00e9 d\u2019un autre si\u00e8cle, la peinture est comme inachev\u00e9e, le trait est maladroit, le visage de l\u2019homme est flou. Quant \u00e0 Edmond de Belamy, il n\u2019existe pas\u00a0! C\u2019est en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 un clin d\u2019\u0153il \u00e0 Ian J. Goodfellow, chercheur am\u00e9ricain qui travaille notamment sur le Machine Learning et dont l\u2019apport sur les <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1406.2661.pdf\">Generative Adversarial Nets<\/a> (GANs) a inspir\u00e9 les trois fondateurs d\u2019Obvious, Pierre Fautrel, Hugo Caseles-Dupr\u00e9 et Gauthier Vernier.<\/p>\n<h3>Comment une intelligence artificielle peut-elle cr\u00e9er une \u0153uvre d\u2019art\u00a0?<\/h3>\n<p>Pour comprendre comment une machine peut se cacher derri\u00e8re la paternit\u00e9 d\u2019une telle \u0153uvre (d\u2019art\u00a0?), il faut se plonger dans les aspects techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Dans une premi\u00e8re \u00e9tape, le collectif Obvious a s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 15&#8217;000 portraits peints entre le XVIII<sup>e<\/sup> et le XX<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, qui constituent le training set (distribution de base), c\u2019est \u00e0 dire l\u2019\u00e9chantillon sur lequel la machine va pouvoir s\u2019entrainer. L\u2019id\u00e9e a ensuite \u00e9t\u00e9 de d\u00e9velopper un mod\u00e8le et des algorithmes pouvant extraire et interpr\u00e9ter les donn\u00e9es contenues dans ces tableaux, soit autant de caract\u00e9ristiques d\u00e9finissant les \u0153uvres d\u2019art de cette p\u00e9riode.<\/p>\n<p>Dans cette optique, ils ont utilis\u00e9 des <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/R%C3%A9seau_de_neurones_artificiels\">r\u00e9seaux de neurones artificiels<\/a> en tant que mod\u00e8les g\u00e9n\u00e9ratifs, qu\u2019ils ont entra\u00een\u00e9 gr\u00e2ce aux diff\u00e9rentes donn\u00e9es extraites des 15&#8217;000 portraits afin de cr\u00e9er la peinture d\u2019Edmond de Belamy. Ces mod\u00e8les g\u00e9n\u00e9ratifs sont capables de d\u00e9celer et de consigner automatiquement et sans intervention humaine (on parle d\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unsupervised_learning\">apprentissage non supervis\u00e9<\/a>) les caract\u00e9ristiques essentielles des images afin d\u2019en g\u00e9n\u00e9rer de nouvelles par la suite.<\/p>\n<p>Un deuxi\u00e8me r\u00e9seau discriminateur (Discriminator) a ensuite \u00e9t\u00e9 introduit pour essayer de d\u00e9terminer si une image d\u2019entr\u00e9e provenait de la distribution de base ou si elle avait \u00e9t\u00e9 g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e par le premier r\u00e9seau (Generator).<\/p>\n<h3>Les Generative Adversarial Networks<\/h3>\n<p>C\u2019est ce qu\u2019on appelle les r\u00e9seaux antagonistes g\u00e9n\u00e9ratifs (Generative Adversarial Networks, GANs). Deux r\u00e9seaux travaillent en opposition l\u2019un contre l\u2019autre dans un processus d\u2019entrainement qui s\u2019apparente \u00e0 un jeu.<\/p>\n<p>Le premier r\u00e9seau, celui du g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur, g\u00e9n\u00e8re des images en se basant sur la distribution de base (training set). A ce moment l\u00e0, les deux distributions se confondent, le discriminateur ne sait plus diff\u00e9rencier si les images qu\u2019on lui soumet sont cr\u00e9\u00e9es par le g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur ou si elles proviennent des donn\u00e9es d\u2019apprentissage (training set).<\/p>\n<p>Le but est donc de faire en sorte que la distribution g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e par le discriminateur co\u00efncide le plus possible avec les donn\u00e9es d\u2019apprentissage. L\u2019\u0153uvre qui en r\u00e9sulte est donc originale puisqu\u2019elle n\u2019est pas la copie d\u2019un tableau existant. C\u2019est un peu comme si un \u00e9l\u00e8ve des beaux arts s\u2019\u00e9tait inspir\u00e9 du travail de Picasso pour peindre un tableau dans le m\u00eame style que le grand ma\u00eetre, tout en conservant une part de singularit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Pour aller jusqu\u2019au bout du processus, Obvious a ensuite imprim\u00e9 le r\u00e9sultat sur une toile pour \u00eatre plus tangible, pour gagner en visibilit\u00e9, mais aussi pour esp\u00e9rer se faire une place \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re dans le milieu tr\u00e8s conservateur de l\u2019art. Et au vu du succ\u00e8s de la vente aux ench\u00e8res, leur d\u00e9marche a \u00e9t\u00e9 payante\u00a0!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Naissance d\u2019un nouveau mouvement artistique\u00a0?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Les membres d\u2019Obvious n\u2019ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 les premiers \u00e0 exploiter le potentiel cr\u00e9atif de l\u2019intelligence artificielle. Elle est certes capable de cr\u00e9er une \u0153uvre \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re, sans intervention humaine (ou presque), mais peut-elle vraiment nous transmettre une \u00e9motion\u00a0? Peut-elle diff\u00e9rencier ce qui est beau\u00a0?<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019histoire de l\u2019art a en tout cas toujours permis d\u2019appr\u00e9hender, au del\u00e0 de l\u2019\u0153uvre elle-m\u00eame, le monde qui nous entoure. L\u2019\u0153uvre nous parle de l\u2019histoire de l\u2019homme et des civilisations, elle est le reflet de nos pr\u00e9occupations, des avanc\u00e9es techniques et scientifiques.
